ABOUT THE LOUISIANA MEDICAL UNITS
The Next Generation of Disaster Response
The LEMU will close the gap in emergency health services by providing surge capacity to local hospitals and medical relief operations in the critical hours after a major hurricane or comparable disaster. This service complements and supplements existing ambulance, Disaster Medical Assistance Teams (DMAT), military and fixed medical facilities and services in affected areas.
The LEMU's primary role is emergency response. The ultimate goal of the Louisiana Emergency Medical
Unit is to provide medical education services and care to underserved populations and areas throughout
Louisiana. Ultimately improving access to and utilization of health care services, not only during emergency
situations, but year-round. It began as a community-based partnership and currently includes representatives from more than seventy medical facilities, private and public corporations, local and state governments, and public health organizations.
The complete complement of the LEMU system will consist of twelve modular mobile units. The units currently in production will provide the critical medical functions of patient assessment and treatment, pharmacy, and command and communication center services. The LEMU is currently developing plans to incorporate units to provide additional services including, but not limited to, mental health services, water purification, food services, staff quarters for sustained deployments, personal hygiene facilities including shower trailers, and wet and dry decontamination of personnel and equipment.
